During rotation 2 the 4th and 5th graders were
introduced to alter-book making. Alter-book making is a form of journaling that incorporates the transformation of an ordinary book into a work of art. Each student utilized a range of art
materials to create a journal that reflects their culture, personal interests, self-perception and individual life goals. Elements of design, critical thinking and deconstruction were all
involved in the creative process of each student. Problem solving and teamwork also played an important role in the development of each student’s artwork. Some students took this project a step
further and decided, on their own, to work collaboratively on a book.
